16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem

Resolution for "The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications"

We believe this error may be caused by a virus or a worm, or even an overactive spyware program. We'd not seen this error before the start of July 2004 and this software was originally designed and released in the late 1990s. I'd suggest doing a virus scan as well as following the instructions below.

The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications, is a general error which is raised when attempting to run a 16-bit application on an incorrectly configured 32-bit platform. In your case you are experiencing the error when attempting to run our program.

Check that the following three files reside in the folder C:\Windows\system32:

command.com
autoexec.nt
config.nt

These are files that are installed with each copy of Windows XP. The fact that they've gone missing is why we suspect a virus or third-party software. If any are missing then you will need to add them to the above folder.

autoexec.nt and config.nt are standard text files and can be created as empty files using Wordpad/Notepad.

command.com will need to be copied from your XP installation disk.

Microsoft have information about this problem on their knowledgebase

After following these instructions our program will run as intended.

If these files disappear again after you follow the Microsoft procedure you should consider that your machine may be infected with a virus. A view supported by the content of this page.

These are files needed by our software for installation, but they're not altered in any way by our programs. If you go here

you'll see quite a number of other programs that are affected by this issue too.
