The Perfect 5th

The 'perfect 5th' is the first note and fifth note of the major scale. If you play the note A at fret 2 on string f of your guitar, you have to count up seven frets (seven semitones) to get to E.

The 'diminished 5th' is the first note and fifth note of the major scale lowered by a semitone. If you play the note A at fret 2 on string f of your guitar, you have to count up six frets (six semitones) to get to E flat.
